Copy Edit the World

This example was from a menu at Denny's. The dash after flavors should be a colon. Also comma should separate carne and the and instead of between warm and creamy. A dollar sign before 3.99 should be used to show price.
This sign was at an apartment complex for the pool. The sign has incorrect time on the spa hours. 12 p.m. should be 12a.m.Monday, September 20, 2010

What makes it news?
The news story I read was on Yahoo!. The story is about gang violence in schools throughout Thailand. 900 incidences have been reported in the first half of this year. It states that it has not been brought to media attention until recently when a 9-year-old boy was killed by stray bullets on a public bus. A lot of the violence not only occurs in school but also on public buses or in malls where many students hang out. The kids tell about the scars they have from either being shot or stabbed during a fight. Many if not most of the fights are between rival vocational schools in Thailand.
This story is newsworthy because of the amount of violence that goes on in these high schools. This is the first time I have ever heard of this happening, but like they said in the article it hasn't received much media attention until now. Over 900 reports in half a year is a lot of violence that is hopefully trying to be stopped. In the article they state that the leaders and influential figures in these gangs gather for a type of retreat in order to make peace and set an example for the future in Thailand.
This story can be localized by comparing it to the gang violence in some city's in the bay area. Gang violence is often reported by the media and this could be an example of how bad it can get if its not kept under control.
The news values I find relevant to this news story are conflict, human interest and Impact or signigicance.

Fly On The Wall
"Coldest beer in town" read the sign from outside the seemingly out of place sports bar in the quiet neighborhood shopping center. "Hole" in the wall would be the first words I would use to describe it but the outside is deceiving. While it was small and dark it was the place to be for locals of all ages. The sun peeked through the small crack of the window, while light beamed from the neon signs and icicle lights in the otherwise dark sports bar. Frosty bottles clanked together as the bikers toasted and gulped down the ice cold beer, "Ready for another?" shouted the young female bartender from behind the crowded bar. Rock music blasted through the speakers while many enjoyed their drinks and engaged in casual conversation. A pool stick reached out and brushed the side of my shoulder as a middle aged woman aimed for the purple striped ball. At that same moment a gleam caught my eye from above, and the disco ball began to spin. From the comfortable leather couch that stretched across the back wall I could make out a few of the happy hour specials on the white board from behind the bar. Two dollar Jack and cokes followed by Fridays special, Kaylee’s Georgia Peach. The loud music and dark atmosphere made me forget that is was the middle of the after noon but I soon remembered as I opened the door and stepped out into the hot sun. The smell of the cigarette smoke from the customers outside the bar lingered as I walked away.

My Favorite Writing
"Armansky’s star researcher was a pale, anorexic young woman who had hair as short as a fuse, and a pierced nose and eyebrows. She had a wasp tattoo about an inch long on her neck, a tattooed loop around the biceps of her left arm and another around her left ankle. On those occasions when she had been wearing a tank top, Armansky also saw that she had a dragon tattoo on her left shoulder blade. She was a natural redhead, but she dyed her hair raven black. She looks as though she had just emerged from a week-long orgy with a gang of hard rockers."

I decided to pick this piece of writing because I really enjoy the book. The main reason I picked this piece from the book is because of the way the author really gets you to picture this "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". After hearing so many people talking about this book, I figured I would give it a try. My first thought was what is this girl in the book going to be like and what part does she play. Well the descriptive details the author gives here really give you a sense of what she is like and what she looks like and definitely answered my questions upon reading the book. I especially like the last line of the quote because it makes you really get a clue of how she must be.
