They have decided that this is the reason for the increasing number of concussions players are getting and they will now put it in the rule book as an illegal move. In my opinion this will benefit players who decide to abide by the rule. The reason they are putting this into place is for safety of the players, no longer can you tackle head first into another player, which officials believe will decrease the number of broken necks or concussions which are very common in the sport of football. The NFL has stated they are taking a very pro-active stand to prevent unnecessary injuries to players. Some players see it as changing the game of football by taking out the “explosiveness of the game” and not allowing players to go out and give everything they have to win a game. I’m not a football player but I see it this way, if you can go out there and memorize plays you can go out there and remember how to tackle the correct way with out breaking a rule. I do understand the point of changing the game, people want to see the hard and big tackles, but you can still put on a show and play the game without doing something that is potentially going to really harm someone. The players need to play smart. Since the rule has been put into place many players have already been fined for breaking the rule, some more than once. I’m not sure on what the policy is if it continues to happen but if they want this rule to be taken seriously they should think about suspending players if there not willing to figure it out, if they haven’t already.

Word of the week 10

1. The main topic of discussion was the ethical challenges of social media in PR. The different reasons why social media has affected PR include being more truthful and accountable, society pays attention to what people are saying, and social platforms allow us to communicate with people in our community. The panelists each spoke on the topic briefly while chiming in with opinions of others.
In the past working in PR you never had to deal with real time, now its part of everyday work. The panelists also spoke about how important ethics are in the business. You need to realize that one persons ethics may be different than others. Jonathan Hirshon touched on the fact that if your not comfortable with what your doing at your job and it doesn't seem ethical, don't do it unless you can come up with a way to make it ethical and talk to your boss and let them know what you have come up with and how you feel the job you are doing is un ethical. I found the symposium very informative and took a way a lot of information on the ethics behind PR. Since PR is my major I feel this information will be very helpful in the future.

Japanese Internment Memorial

The Japanese Internment was the movement of 110,000 Japanese Americans along the pacific coast of the United States into camps after the attack on Pearl Harbor. 62 percent of those who were interned were American citizens. Japanese Americans during the time of the Internment that attended SJSU were forced to leave in order to go to the assembly centers during this time.
Ruth Asawa is a Japanese American born 1926 in Norwalk, California. In 1942 her family was moved to an assembly center during the Japanese American Internment. She graduated High School in the internment. She is a well known Sculptor and is the creator of the Japanese Internment memorial in San Jose.
The memorial depicts a variety of scenes in a somewhat time line order of the Japanese Americans being removed from their homes and into these camps. One scene from the memorial that caught my eye was a family with children getting off of a train going to the camp, standing close by the family is a soldier with guns. I can imagine how intimidating and scary this would be not only for the family but for the children, who most likely do not understand what is going on. Another scene from the memorial that I found interesting was how the families still did family activities or normal things even though they are being forced to be in these uncomfortable location.
In my opinion I don't think that something like this will happen again, but maybe that is just hope that people will not be ignorant and think things through.

In my humble opinion

A recent article in the San Francisco Chronicle states that the San Francisco Board of Supervisors have given preliminary approval to ban toys in happy meals unless they start to provide a more nutritious meal for children. I understand why they want to put a ban on the toys, but I don't entirely agree. Yes fast food meals and meals of the like are not the most nutritious choice for children but nowadays it is part of our culture. Just because you ban a toy from a child's meal is not going to stop the parents who are buying their children the meal from buying them, but who knows maybe it will decrease. I say that because my nephew who is five only wants the meal for the toy, so maybe that will stop kids from wanting the fast food. Unfortunately if parents our feeding their kids fast food then they are most likely not going to stop, and its the parents that control what their kids eat not the toy in the meal. According to an article on AOL Daily Finance "Such a ban would rob Californians of free choice and substitutes responsible parenting with government supervision," In my opinion its not up to the government to watch what kids our eating it's the parent or guardian that is responsible for what they put in their bodies.

See full article from DailyFinance: http://srph.it/d6TQfE

Word of the week 9

1. The description of the troop leader Mrs. Margolin, really stood out to me and I could picture her exactly. The author uses many similies in the writting, an example would be "She wagged her index finger perfunctorily, like a winshield wiper.", or You can just imagine a parent standing in front of you telling you no, and what not to do. Another similie is "Whose hair hung past her butt like a hawaiian hula dancer." The description she uses for the "invaders" or the caucasion troop, "the ten white girls behind us were instantly real and memorable, with their long shampoo-comercial hair, straight as spaghetti from the box." I really enjoyed this story because of how descriptive it was. Everything was described and or compared to something so that you could picture it as soon as you read it.

Word of the week 7

1. The interviewer started the interview off by giving some background information about Justin as well as his career acomplishments. The interview began with his most recent success of the potrayal of Napster creator Sean Parker in the movie Social Netork. She asked questions about the directing of the film and cast portrayal in which Justin seemed to answer honestly and gave his opinions on these questions. Questions came up along the lines of his interest in comed, in which she brought up his most recent skit with Jimmy Fallon. Justin stated that he has always been into making people laugh since he was a little kid running around with a Jackson Five wig on.
The interviewers stratagey seemed to be start with his most recent acomplishments and work her way backward to the begginning of his career, where and how he got started in the entertainment industry.
There didn't seem to be any kind of relationship between the two, but she was obviously familar with who he is and he did mention at the end he was looking forward to the interview becaus he was a fan of her show.
From this interview I learned that starting with questions about the new and most interesting things that are going on in the persons life and career are most important so you can be sure to get those answered. Dont be afraid to ask a follow up question if they said something interesting when answering another question, this was done often in the interview and you learned quite a bit more about him by expanding on what he was saying.

Mystery Character

I am the daughter of an academy-award winning actress. The story is about gang violence in schools throughout Thailand. 900 incidences have been reported in the first half of this year. It states that it has not been brought to media attention until recently when a 9-year-old boy was killed by stray bullets on a public bus. A lot of the violence not only occurs in school but also on public buses or in malls where many students hang out. The kids tell about the scars they have from either being shot or stabbed during a fight. Many if not most of the fights are between rival vocational schools in Thailand.
This story is newsworthy because of the amount of violence that goes on in these high schools. This is the first time I have ever heard of this happening, but like they said in the article it hasn't received much media attention until now. Over 900 reports in half a year is a lot of violence that is hopefully trying to be stopped. In the article they state that the leaders and influential figures in these gangs gather for a type of retreat in order to make peace and set an example for the future in Thailand.
This story can be localized by comparing it to the gang violence in some city's in the bay area. Gang violence is often reported by the media and this could be an example of how bad it can get if its not kept under control.
The news values I find relevant to this news story are conflict, human interest and Impact or signigicance.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100921/ap_on_re_as/as_thailand_gang_wars

Word of the week 3

1.Coterie
2. "Hole" in the wall would be the first words I would use to describe it but the outside is deceiving. While it was small and dark it was the place to be for locals of all ages. The sun peeked through the small crack of the window, while light beamed from the neon signs and icicle lights in the otherwise dark sports bar. Frosty bottles clanked together as the bikers toasted and gulped down the ice cold beer, "Ready for another?" shouted the young female bartender from behind the crowded bar. Rock music blasted through the speakers while many enjoyed their drinks and engaged in casual conversation. A pool stick reached out and brushed the side of my shoulder as a middle aged woman aimed for the purple striped ball. At that same moment a gleam caught my eye from above, and the disco ball began to spin. From the comfortable leather couch that stretched across the back wall I could make out a few of the happy hour specials on the white board from behind the bar. Two dollar Jack and cokes followed by Fridays special, Kaylee’s Georgia Peach. The loud music and dark atmosphere made me forget that is was the middle of the after noon but I soon remembered as I opened the door and stepped out into the hot sun. The smell of the cigarette smoke from the customers outside the bar lingered as I walked away.

Word of the week 2

Word of the week 2
1.Proselytizing
2.To induce someone; to convert to one’s own religious faith or political party.
3."In his free time he travelled around and did proselytizing for Nazism."
4.Lasts nights Political debate proselytized many Americans political views.

My Favorite Writing

"Armansky’s star researcher was a pale, anorexic young woman who had hair as short as a fuse, and a pierced nose and eyebrows. On those occasions when she had been wearing a tank top, Armansky also saw that she had a dragon tattoo on her left shoulder blade. She was a natural redhead, but she dyed her hair raven black. She looks as though she had just emerged from a week-long orgy with a gang of hard rockers."
By Stieg Larsson
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Page 32
Published 2005

I decided to pick this piece of writing because I really enjoy the book. The main reason I picked this piece from the book is because of the way the author really gets you to picture this "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". After hearing so many people talking about this book, I figured I would give it a try. My first thought was what is this girl in the book going to be like and what part does she play. Well the descriptive details the author gives here really give you a sense of what she is like and what she looks like and definitely answered my questions upon reading the book. I especially like the last line of the quote because it makes you really get a clue of how she must be.

Word of the week #1

1.
